Are You Living in Peace?

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

Are you living in peace?

In John 14:27 Jesus tells His disciples that He is leaving them His peace. This promise of peace comes before He reminds them that He is about to go away. And not just go away, but before His departure they would witness their Master being mocked, beaten, lied upon, ultimately killed, and many of them would experience persecution because of their association with Him. Jesus knew they’d have a hard time with this, and for some of them, their hearts would become troubled and afraid. As a result, He spoke His promise of peace to them beforehand so that when the events did unfold, they would not be shaken.

The Hebrew word for peace Jesus speaks of in John 14:27 is Shalom, and it means complete peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquility. This peace, or shalom, is counterintuitive to the peace the world gives. Why? Because it gives those who possess it its benefits even when life is spinning out of control. It isn’t based upon an outward set of circumstances, rather it rests upon the foundation of spiritual truth that God is completely in control and is actively with us in every aspect of our lives, and He makes all things well– this brings Shalom.

The promise of peace Jesus gave His disciples is the same promise He gives us today. His Shalom. The unshakable knowing that whether life is one win after another, or it’s spinning out of control all is well, and because of that our hearts and our minds are in a place of complete peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare, and tranquility.

Today may Shalom rule in our hearts so that whether our day is going beautifully or its feels like it’s been turned upside-down, we can have the assurance that all is well, because with God on our side all really is well.

God Bless You.

Love,

Dana
